Discord Text Formatting (Markdown)

There are two ways to style text on Discord. The fancy fonts above are Unicode characters, so they work everywhere, including your display name, server name, and channel names. Discord's built-in markdown, shown below, is different. It only renders as formatting inside messages, but it is the right tool for bold, spoilers, and code blocks.

Discord has no font commands. The markdown below is the closest built-in equivalent, and everything else comes from pasting Unicode fonts like the ones this page generates.

How to Change Your Font in Discord

Three steps to a custom font anywhere on Discord

  1. 1

Type your text into the generator

Enter the word or phrase you want to style in the box at the top of the page. Every font updates live as you type.
  2. 2

Pick a font style and copy it

Browse the styles, from bold and cursive to bubbles and upside down, then click the one you like to copy it to your clipboard.
  3. 3

    Paste it into Discord

Paste the styled text wherever you want it. For your display name, open User Settings, go to Profiles, and edit your name. For a server or channel name, use Server Settings or the channel edit menu. For a message, just paste and send.

Where Discord Fonts Work (and Where They Don't)

These fonts are Unicode characters, not a real font swap, so they travel with the text almost everywhere.

Works in

  • Your Discord display name and username
  • Server names and channel names
  • Messages, bios, and status text
  • Desktop, web, and the mobile app

Keep in mind

  • Searching for someone by a fancy name (Discord searches plain text)
  • Screen readers, which read the underlying Unicode characters
  • A few older third-party apps that strip non-standard characters

What Font Does Discord Use?

What is the Discord font name?

Discord's interface font is gg sans, the custom typeface it switched to in 2022. Before that, Discord used Whitney for years. Code blocks and inline code render in a separate monospace face.

What fonts does Discord support?

None that you can pick from settings. Discord renders everything in gg sans, and inside messages the built-in markdown above covers bold, italic, and code. Everything beyond that comes from Unicode. Instead of swapping the app font, this tool rewrites your text using Unicode characters that already look bold, cursive, or styled. Discord displays those characters as-is, so your name or message shows up in a custom style without touching any settings.
