Discord documents a 10 MB cap for profile banners and publishes no figure for avatars. In practice the file size is rarely the problem. A 512x512 PNG is normally under 500 KB, well inside anything Discord asks for. When an upload gets rejected it is usually the file type instead. PNG and JPG are the supported types, and an animated GIF needs Nitro.

Pick the slot you are sizing for
Choose profile picture at 512x512, HD profile picture at 1024x1024, or server icon at 512x512. All three stay square because Discord shows every one of them as a circle. - 2
Upload your image
Drag a file into the frame, click it to browse, or paste an image straight from your clipboard with Ctrl+V. PNG, JPG, WebP, and GIF files all open in the cropper. - 3
Frame what lands inside the circle
Drag the image to move it and use the zoom slider to scale it. The dimmed ring marks everything Discord crops away, so keep the face or the logo inside the bright circle. - 4
Download it and set it in Discord
Download the PNG or JPG at the exact pixel size. Set a profile picture in User Settings under Profiles with Change Avatar, or a server icon in Server Settings.
Discord Avatar and Icon Sizes
Discord's own settings call your pfp an avatar, so a Discord avatar size and a Discord pfp size are the same question. Every circular slot takes a square file, and the same 512x512 upload covers all of them. Discord downscales whatever you upload, so a 512x512 source stays sharp on a high resolution screen where a 128x128 source looks soft. PNG and JPG both work for the upload, and an animated GIF pfp needs Nitro.

Why Discord Crops Your PFP Into a Circle
Discord renders every avatar and every server icon as a circle. The file you upload is a square, and Discord masks the corners off it. About a fifth of the square is hidden that way, spread across the four corners.
There is no separate circle size to design for. The circle is drawn inside the square you upload, so a 512x512 file gives you a 512 pixel circle.
A rectangle is the other trap. Discord's upload step crops a square out of it, so the ends of a wide photo never reach the circle. Cropping to a square yourself first keeps that decision yours.
The dimmed ring in the cropper above is that mask. Whatever sits in the dim area is gone once Discord renders it. Center the face or the logo, leave a little room at the edges, and check the bright circle before you download.
